H. Glossop, of Ambergate. Private Glossop, who was killed by a gas shell on Sunday, 19 December, was attached to the 10th Sherwood Foresters and had been at the front some seven or eight months. The Lieutenant of the company wrote imparting the news of his death. A further intimation has been sent by a comrade to his father in Derby. In civil life Private Glossop was employed in the electrical department of the Midland Railway at Derby, where he was very popular and well liked. Throughout the parish of Heage he was well spoken of as being of a humble and sympathetic disposition. He would have been 24 years of age next June. Mr Bernard Glossop, father of the deceased, was formerly clerk to the Heage Urban Council and up to recently was vice-chairman and a member of the Education Committee. Mr. and Mrs. Glossop have another son in the army, Company Sergt. Major J. Glossop. Mrs. Glossop also has a brother at the front, Corporal George Tongue – who has seen considerable service. Mr. Glossop himself patriotically offered his services but was rejected as being over age. The deceased Private Glossop was anticipating being over at home for Christmas. The last time he was home was last Christmas but one.
